My name is Alexandra Mendez-Zfass, and I am in process of fulfilling my aspiration to become a teacher. I am currently a student in the University of Richmond’s Teacher Licensure Program and am looking forward to student teaching during the fall of 2011. The idea of becoming a teacher has blossomed into a true passion. I want to be an elementary school teacher and empower children. Parents and teachers lay the foundation for a child’s self-respect, confidence, education, and self-awareness. Elementary school teachers have the privilege and sometimes hard task of being a mentor, inspiration, and creating a safe place for children. Getting children on the “right track” can positively affect that child for the rest of his or her life. Teachers are vital in helping children realize their greatest potential. Teachers are invaluable in the life of a child, and it is an honor to be put in that position.
I was born and raised in Richmond, Virginia and attended The Collegiate Schools. After graduation, I attended the University of Virginia where I volunteered at the local SPCA and danced as a member of the dance team “Allure.” I joined the Delta Gamma sorority and received membership to Sigma Alpha Lamda: National Leadership and Honors Organization for academic performance, character, and leadership. In the spring of 2008, I received my Bachelor of Arts with a major in history, with a concentration in 1850-1950 European History and American History. I then moved to Washington, D.C. and worked briefly in television representation during the 2008 Presidential Election. I soon realized that this was not my calling and returned to Richmond and enrolled in the TLP program.
Becoming a teacher is a passion that lies within me, and I am ready to live out that passion. I look forward to being the best teacher I can be. It has been a long time coming.
