This is a Civics lesson plan for the first day of the citizenship unit based on Virginia SOLs CE.3a-e. The PowerPoint presentation on “John the citizen” serves as an introduction to what it means to be a United States citizen, and its purpose is to get the students interested in the content without teaching the details. The narrative script for the teacher to read during the presentation is in the lesson plan. After viewing the presentation, the teacher and students will continue with the lesson on naturalization and becoming a citizen. Throughout the remaining citizenship lessons, the teacher can refer back to “John the citizen.”
