1.   Tell the students that you are going to read a book about Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. called Martin’s Big Words.

2.   Talk to the class about the injustices Martin experienced early on in his life and how he decided to use his words to fight for civil rights.

3.   Explain to them that they will be creating a list of the most important words from the story to help us figure out what is most important about the book. Before we do this Mrs. Yox will show everyone how to pick out Big Words while we listen to some of Martin’s “I Have A Dream” Speech.

4. In pair the students will write 10 key word from the story. Pass out 10 sticky notes to each pair.  Read the book Martin’s Big Words by Doreen Rappaport, pausing to emphasize important points in the story.

5.   Guide the students in creating a bar graph grouping common words together. Discuss the most popular words and how these are the most important key points of the book.

6.    Ask students to volunteer why they think particular words are important, or not important. Ask them to comment on if they would change their word list now that they have discussed the words and text with their peers.

7.   Have students write a one sentence summary of the text using many of the important words.

Assessment:

Listen to the student discussion of the important word lists.

Collect students’ summary sentences to see that put the key points in their own words, using many of the most important words.
