SOL AII/T.25: The student will verify basic trigonometric identities and make substitutions, using the basic identities.
I created a graphic organizer for 6 of the basic identity functions. I remember when I was learning the basic identities in Trigonometry, my teacher just handed out a formula sheet with 30-40 different formulas. She never taught a good method for remembering the identities. I created this graphic organizer to help students visually represent equalities, while also grouping similar functions.
I have left space for students to fill in the blanks as either a homework or a classwork assignment. Later, this graphic organizer (and similar organizers with other basic identities) can be cut up and made into flash cards to help students memorize the formulas. However, dividing the identities into smaller, inter-related groups allows students to ‘chunk’ information, increasing the chances of retention.
That’s interesting. Apparently my teacher did nothing to help me remember that either because it’s long gone.
I do like this theme.
