I have created a first grade lesson plan to teach animal classification specific to animal body coverings (VA Science SOL 1.5b). It covers the following animal body coverings: hair, fur, feathers, scales, shells. The Keynote presentation contains photos of animals. Students need to identify the animal body covering for each slide/photo. Then students each get an animal sort containing the same photos in the presentation to practice sorting on their own (first in class and then again for homework).

Fun pictures. I think you might have issues with the turtle (scales on legs, shell on back). You might also consider whether limiting feathers to transportation is overly restrictive given their role in insulation, camouflage etc.

I update the turtle slide to show both shell & scales. I also updated the “Why is the animal body covering important?” slide to contain only that wording. I will allow the students to provide answers and write on the board. The lesson plan was updated accordingly. Thanks!
